The Sancy Diamond

The Sancy is a slightly yellow diamond which weighs 55 carats. It has the form of a peach stone and was probably found in India. The Sancy diamond is unusual because it has no pavilion, only a pair of crowns.

In the 15th century the diamond belonged to Charles Bold of Burgundy. He used the diamond as a lucky charm, but he lost the battle, his life and the diamond.

Later the diamond was purchased by Nicholas Harlai de Sancy in Constantinople who brought the diamond to France.

Years later Sancy had to sell the diamond out of money issues to James I. of England.

Later the Sancy diamond was owned by Louis XIV. The diamond was then stolen during the French Revolution, but was found years later to be sold to a Russian prince.

Sancy Diamond
It is said that the diamond was also part of the Spanish Crown Jewels and that it was returned to Maharadscha Guttiola. In 1867 the diamond was on display in Paris.

In 1906 William Waldorf Astor bought the Sancy diamond as a wedding present für his son. Lady Astor wore the diamond in a tiara on state occasions.

Now the Sancy diamond is in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Legends around the Sancy diamond

The legend has it that Sancy sent a messenger with the diamond to the King of France, but the messenger was killed by robbers. Sancy knew the loyalty of his servant. So, as the dead body was discovered, Sancy opened the stomach of his servant and the diamond was found. This, my friend, is true loyalty!
