Diamond Formation

Diamond is formed by prolonged exposure of carbon bearing materials to high pressure and temperature.

Billions of years ago 300 km beneath the earth surface at temperatures of over 2200 degrees Fahrenheit (1200 degrees Celsius) and enormous pressure of more than 5 gigapascals carbon atoms form bonds.

Rock formations moved slowly upwards and cooled down - carbon crystallized and diamonds started to exist - after billions of years.

70 to 150 million years ago diamonds ascend to the Earth’s surface in magma rock. The magma rises and erupts in volcanos, carrying diamonds. After years and years the wind and the rain washes the diamonds away. That’s why diamonds are not only found beneath volcanos in carrot-shaped pipes, but also in sea.
